A bulky portable laptop is hardly the solution if you are a businessperson on the move. A phone can now be doubled up as an Internet device but a rich web experience is hardly ever smooth even on the fastest and most powerful of phones and convergence devices. The ultra portable laptop is the newest addition to the mobile PC market and it is targeted at people who need to access the internet and do other lightweight computing tasks while still on the move.

The ultra portable laptop is the epitome of miniaturization. While laptops have always been considerably, smaller, thinner and lighter than their desktop counterparts, the ultra portables are a whole generation ahead with regards to being compact. They are light, razor thin and have a small screen, making them the perfect travel partner.

It is a good idea to check out the dimensions once you decide to purchase a portable laptop. A laptop that is ultra thin in size and does not weigh a ton. They usually vary between 12 to 13 inches in size and the thickness of an inch makes it the ideal choice for your office away from your city. The processors are generally low voltage and mobile with a few of them containing dual core CPUs as well. There is a limitation on the number of ports and connections though. However, you will be able to make use of all essential features including the LAN, modem and Wi-Fi. The Bluetooth and WWAN are optional and will be incorporated within your ultra thin portable laptop only if you request them.

However sleek and light ultra portable laptops are, there are nevertheless some notable omissions. In order to keep size to a bare minimum, they generally lack an optical drive. Additionally they will come with only one or two USB connectors which limit peripheral connection speeds and capabilities.

Like most things, this particular type of portable laptop comes with its own set of disadvantages too. The small size of the machine has been achieved by sacrificing a few ports and removable disc drives. The battery provided, however, is adequate and can help to run your machine continuously for a period of 2-2.5 hours.

The price of an ultra thin model of a portable laptop may be daunting. The good news is that you may well have the option of forgoing certain features specially when they are not likely to serve you. With most of the features being optional, the price of an ultra thin portable laptop may vary considerably. You can easily settle for a model of US$ 1000 or choose one with all possible additions which can cost you as much as US$ 2500.

Choosing any particular brand may be a difficult task. Every manufacturer of portable laptop computers provides you with an ultra thin laptop option. From Dell to Sony, Lenovo to Compaq, the market is huge for ultra thin portable computers and every one of the manufacturers will offer you a competitive price.

The most important thing to remember when buying an ultra portable laptop is its intended use. It can never be a replacement for your pc or regular portable laptop. It is too less powerful and small to be a replacement. However, for light processing tasks and a full featured Internet experience on the go, they are a perfect choice.
